At Present

Claude and Alice Monet

Claude and Alice Monet, Piazza San Marco, Venice.

“It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for a bird to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.”

–C.S. Lewis

Why Birds Sing

I recently had the pleasure of meeting David Rothenberg….who says “Birdsong is not like music. It is music.”

The tribe/pod/flock who believe animals have aesthetics is growing.

David has also played for belugas.

Electric Pow Wow

I’m working on book edits at the library at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Dreaming about the next Music for Animals concerts…and itching to work on my next project..which I can’t yet talk about. Let’s say that working with A Tribe Called Red is very, very high on the list.

Also, if you’re in New York, come to the benefit concert for Leonard Peltier at the Beacon Theater tomorrow night.

Animal Forum

Yesterday I was on Forum with Michael Krasny on KQED, along with Sharon Maidenberg of the Headlands Center for the Arts, and artists Paolo Salvagione, Phil Ross and the musician Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billie. We were talking about art, animals, music, fungus, clocks, and most of all, the Headlands 30th Anniversary/Birthday party that’s happening this weekend. Come out. Say hi.

And if you missed the show, it’s streaming on KQED.

Meowingtons: $1000 Headphones “By cats for cats”

I wonder how you’re supposed to feel when someone makes an elaborate prank of something you actually take seriously. I mean, it’s not like I am busy making kitty headphones…but I have been wondering if Devo’s cats were really into the last album.**

Dear Deadmau5,

In case you’re listening, hit me up. Let’s talk about what’s inside those headphones of yours and see about making some tracks of the death gasps of mice.

xo,

Laurel

ps. Last week, when I was at the dentist, I found out I was on the BBC talking about all this. Check it.

Magic Trip

I don’t know if it’s moving to the Sausalito houseboats and finally finding a corner of SF counterculture to call my own, but I’ve been spending a lot of time watching footage from the 1960s Bay Area. Last night I was watching Magic Trip about Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s 1964 road trip to NYC and I noticed in a cutaway shot, Ken Kesey high on acid, playing the flute for a gorilla at an unnamed zoo while Stark Naked did a cartwheel in a bikini. Once I have a moment, I’m going to start searching out that footage…let me know if you want to help!

For Nonhumans Only

Dear Animal Kingdom,

Feel free to check out the front window of 509 Cultural Center and the Tenderloin National Forest in SF. There’s something playing for you there. And if you get there fast enough, maybe some sunflower seeds. Also, stick around for the rest of Streetopia. It’s going to be great.

Sincerely,

Laurel

I was just reintroduced to this 1930s Walt Disney gem by artist Katherine McLeod.

Watch her piece “Welcome Home Sky Soldier, Tethered Monkey in the Haunted Hooch” from Vietnam.

Also, fish drawn over the telephone.

I have nothing to do with this, except that I think it’s great. I hope they release a film.
